BOYNE CITY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) — A Grand Rapids based distillery is expanding to northern Michigan.

Long Road Distillers is in the process of opening its first tasting room in Boyne City.

Its other location is its headquarters on the west side of Grand Rapids.

It will share space inside the Outdoor Beerdsman in downtown Boyne City.

There, you’ll be able to taste samples and purchase bottle and merchandise.

“Boyne City just made sense to us,” said Kyle VanStrien, a co-owner of the distillery. “It’s a great four seasons community. It’s a beautiful location, and people have an appreciation for farm to table anything, whether that’s their food or their beverages. So, we wanted to be a part of the community. We want to become great neighbors and a good part of the business community as well.”

Long Road sources all its ingredients locally.

The distillery plans to have its new tasting room open by the end of this year.

Grand Rapids-Based Long Road Distillers to Open New Location in Boyne City, Michigan

New distillery Tasting Room to open in the heart of Downtown Boyne City retail district

Grand Rapids, Michigan – Grand Rapids-based Long Road Distillers announced on Wednesday that they will be opening a new distillery tasting room in Boyne City, Michigan. The northern Michigan outlet will be the company’s first offsite tasting room apart from their headquarters on the West Side of Grand Rapids where they house their production facility, cocktail bar and restaurant. Visitors to the new Boyne City location will be able to sample Long Road’s line-up of handcrafted spirits, participate in special tasting events, and purchase merchandise and bottles to-go.

“The Long Road team is thrilled to join the Boyne City community,” said Kyle VanStrien, Long Road Distillers Co-Founder and Co-Owner. “It’s a beautiful town with a thriving retail district, engaged business community, and countless activities for residents and visitors to enjoy throughout the year.”

The Long Road Tasting Room will be located at 118 Water Street in the heart of the Central Business District in Downtown Boyne City. It will share a storefront with The Outdoor Beerdsman, a befitting partnership considering the handcrafted nature of the retailer who designs and prints their own apparel, and creates custom jewelry, all in-house.

“We’re excited to have Long Road Distillers join our downtown business community,” said Ashley Cousens, Executive Director of the Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce. “We think they’ll be a great compliment to the many options we have for residents and visitors to enjoy – our retail shops, brewpubs, restaurants, wineries and bars. This will add another unique attraction and a line of handcrafted products that help highlight the agricultural bounty of Michigan.”

Northern Michigan has become a vital part of the Long Road story and holds a special place in the hearts of VanStrien and fellow Co-Owner and Co-Founder Jon O’Connor.

“We are committed to using Michigan-grown ingredients in our spirits whenever possible,” said O’Connor. “MICHIGIN, our 100% Michigan ingredient gin, depends on ingredients grown in Northern Michigan. Our team spends several days each fall harvesting juniper on nearby Beaver Island, and we’ve incorporated galena hops from the Michigan Hop Alliance in Northport to add a citrus component to the gin’s botanical makeup.”

“As we’ve done in West Michigan, we’re excited to build partnerships with Boyne area farmers to develop new products that highlight the unique terroir of the region,” adds O’Connor.

While an official open date has not been announced, Long Road Distillers is actively seeking applicants for a Tasting Room Manager and Retail Associate team members.

Northern Michigan residents will soon have a spot to sample the handcrafted vodkas, gins and whiskeys created by Grand Rapids-based Long Road Distillers.

The distillery plans to open a tasting room in Boyne City by the holiday season, said Kyle VanStrien, Long Road’s co-owner.

“It really helps us make a statement to the community that we want to be members,” he said. “We want to be good neighbors, and we want them to think of us when they are thinking of enjoying some Michigan craft spirits.”

The tasting room will be located at 118 Water Street, in Boyne City’s business district. Shoppers can sample Long Road products such as Michigin, created using botanicals from Michigan, including juniper that’s handpicked on Beaver Island.

Long Road’s products can be found at 1,100 stores and restaurants across the state, including at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Copper Harbor.

But having a tasting room gives the distillery an opportunity to further build its name recognition, VanStrien said, adding that Boyne City is a prime location for doing so because it draws a steady stream of visitors to nearby ski hills, lakes and state parks.

“It’s almost a captive audience for us year-round,” he said. “To be able to tap into that four-seasons market is great.”

The tasting room is geared toward retail sales. There are samples available, but full pours are not permitted.

Long Road Distillers Named Best Craft Specialty Spirits Distillery in the Country

Grand Rapids distillery takes top honors in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Travel Awards Contest for second straight year

Grand Rapids, Michigan – Internationally recognized Grand Rapids distillery, Long Road Distillers, has taken home top honors for the second year in a row and was named “Best Craft Specialty Spirits Distillery in the United States” as part of the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Travel Awards. Over their three-year history the distillery has gained lots of attention for their award-winning, locally-sourced and craft-distilled line-up of spirits, including gins, vodkas, aquavits, whiskies, and liqueurs.

Long Road Distillers topped a list of 20 nominees from around the country that were carefully chosen by a panel of American spirits experts. The public then had the opportunity to vote for their favorites over the course of four weeks. The nominating panel included Emily Arden Wells, editor and founder of Gastronomista; Brian Christensen, publisher and editor of Artisan Spirit Magazine; Ziggy Eschliman, founder of ZigStyle and award-winning radio host; Kevin Gray, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Bevvy; Eric Grossman, a food and beverage writer and author of Craft Spirits; and Jack Robertiello, a writer and acclaimed wine and spirits judge.

“We’re excited to share this honor with our friends and supporters for a second year!” said Jon O’Connor, co-owner and founder of Long Road Distillers. “We have a ton of respect for every nominee on this list, and we’ve admired them as leaders in our industry for years. To be nominated with them is honor enough – but to top the list is truly humbling!”

O’Connor and fellow co-owner Kyle VanStrien are quick to recognize how this award is different from past honors, and credit not only their team, but also their loyal customers, guests, family and friends.

“Unlike some competitions where judging takes place amongst a few individuals, this contest offers those that enjoy our spirits around the country an opportunity to show their support,” said VanStrien. “We’re proud of our team for constantly living out our mission of crafting world-class spirits right here in West Michigan, and always pushing the boundaries of what can be made from local agriculture!”

Long Road’s no-shortcuts approach to crafting spirits and a dedication to using locally sourced ingredients has earned them numerous honors and awards, as well as international acclaim for some lesser-known spirits categories, such as their Aquavits and liqueurs. Their spirits can be found at the distillery on Grand Rapids’ West Side and at over 1,000 retailers, bars, and restaurants throughout the state of Michigan.

Michigan Apple Brandy Long Road Distillers

Grand Rapids Distillery to Release Apple Brandy Made in Partnership with Local Orchard, Cidery

Long Road Apple Brandy will be released on Tuesday, October 9 at the Long Road Distillers Tasting Room

Grand Rapids, Michigan – Grand Rapids-based Long Road Distillers will release a new barrel-aged Apple Brandy on Tuesday, October 9, at the distillery on Grand Rapids’ West Side. Statewide distribution of Long Road Apple Brandy will follow later this month.

Long Road Apple Brandy was made in partnership with Schaefer Orchard and Pux Cider Company based out of nearby Conklin, Michigan. The 80-proof spirit has been aged in used whisky barrels for nearly a year, allowing flavors to mellow and develop over time, resulting in bright apple and honey aromas, and a dry floral finish.

“Considering our proximity to one of the best fruit growing regions in the world, we view fruit brandies as a huge opportunity for us to highlight local agriculture,” said Jon O’Connor, co-owner and co-founder of Long Road, referring to the Fruit Ridge located just north of Grand Rapids. “We’re really pleased with the way the tart, local apples shine through in Long Road Apple Brandy. The varieties of apples and the style of cider Pux is making really lend themselves to high quality brandy.”

To celebrate the release, Long Road will be offering half-off samples and featured cocktails at the distillery from 4pm to Midnight on Tuesday, October 9. It will also be the first opportunity to purchase a bottle of Long Road Apple Brandy to bring home.

Follow along and stay up to date on release details through the distillery’s FaceBook page @longroaddistillersgr.
